U862’s War Patrol off Gisborne and Napier in 1945.
In 1992, New Zealand newspapers broke the story of the U862 in New Zealand waters, the only U-boat war patrol in the Pacific. Although the Allies were aware of U862’s incursion into Australian waters, nothing was known about her visit to New Zealand waters in December 1944
During the course of Gerald Shone’s extensive research, he met men who served on the U-boat during the secret Pacific mission. These meetings in Germany resulted in first-hand information being made available for the book
U-boat in New Zealand Waters is an intriguing read illustrated by a unique collection of photographs, maps and diagrams.
